Sidney Poitier Early Life

  • Sidney Poitier was born on February 20, 1927, prematurely in the United States while his parents were on a visit. He was brought up in the Bahamas and enrolled himself in the US Army as a teenager during World War II. After serving in the medical unit of the US Army for a while, he submitted his application to the American Negro Theatre in New York City. He couldn’t get a place there due to his accent, because of which, he had to learn American enunciation on his own. After reapplying 6 months later, he got a place there and he started studying acting all the while appearing in the productions of the American Negro Theatre. He got his Broadway break in 1946 in Lysistrata.
