There had been some dark times for sci-fi race games after Sony shut Wipeout designer Studio Liverpool in 2012. As Nintendo left F-Zero to languish, high-speed antigrav racers became one particular “don’t make ’em like they always” genres for a couple years, until indie games like Redout and BallisticNG started initially to fill the void. There are always a lot of these games now, but the majority of them simply take after Wipeout a lot more than F-Zero.

Then there is Aero GPX, which appears F-Zero as heeeeell.
